Wheels on the Mini go Wop Wop Wop

2014 F56S
Bought the car little over a year ago. Brakes were real graby when I bought it but before I bought it I checked and it had all new pads so I assumed it had new or newly cleaned, rotors. Grabyness went away but it has always had that Wop Wop Wop when coming to a stop that has always meant warped rotors in my past experience.

Pulled off all the wheels today and confirmed the brake pads are in almost new condition. Only thing I could find was the rear passenger sensor wire was broken. If I take the hose to the front brakes when cleaning the car the feel is greatly diminished but comes back soon after.

I have changed more than a few brakes and rotors over the years but .. the mini is a new animal. I am reasonably sure the broken sensor wire cant be doing it nor could the brake dust accumulation on the front wheels but.. thought I should ask before I buy new rotors.

Thank you and any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Dial indicate each rotor to determine if runout is within spec. If not within spec, remove the caliper, remove the rotor and clean the hub. Replace the rotor and then dial indicate again to confirm that the rotor is still out of spec. If you need to replace, do both sides, not just the culprit.

I wanted to come back and review some of my posts after having the car for a bit for others that come along. I now have the car 2 years.

The wop wop wop was actually the engine breaking. I used bimmercode to have the car start in sport mode. In sport mode the engine breaking is ... well .. a bit more aggressive and different. When coasting down to a light it will hang on to its RPM a bit longer and then engine break fairly aggressively even though you are slowing to a stop. I thought it was bad rotors but rotors all check out and once I switched into "Normal" the hard engine break coming to a stop at a light went away. So .. nothing at all wrong with the brakes. It is the natural action of running in sports mode.

im with you but mine is an auto so I have little control over the engine break except to only put the car in sports mode when i want to mess around a bit but run it in mid for daily travel.

I've stopped using the Sport Mode for the most part for everyday driving as we are trying to hold one to our R59. For the most part sport mode does more tear and wear on the car than it is worth. Brakes, engine, exhaust, they all take a beating for a slightly better response. It's really only worth it when you happen to be on a trip on a winding road and you feel sporty that day rather than enjoy the scenery. Stop and go traffic to the grocery store, forget-it!
