dust shields below freezing?

I am trying out some dust shields on my '02 MCS. I have R83 w/Dunlop run flat snows and during the past two winters I have had snowmelt freeze and reduce braking ability. My hope is that the shields will shelter the wheels from snowbank scrub and general salty slush spray. I have heard that dealers will sell steel rims for the MCS now (and not before) so cooling can't be a critical issue. The Cooper can have steels w/ hub caps all with the same brakes. I plan to use them only during the cold months.
Is my theory flawed? Anyone had a bad experience in any season?

I would not use dust shields. We used to handle them, and no longer do. Brakes need to cool, and they dont help very much.
