I used to ski alot in the Austrian Alps, and cars have to drive on snow and then roads alot there. Check out http://www.spikes-spiders.com They make a variety of winter driving systems that should fit MINI. Chains are ok, but Spike Spiders are much better, safer, easier to install and seem to work better. I don't have a set yet, but am thinking about getting them for this snow season. The two main reasons I would avoid chains are 1:difficult to install, 2:can cause fender damage if they break, 3:a real pain to take on and off. (lots of roads here in Virginia are partially plowed)

Good snows will work pretty well, but a traction system is needed in the mountains.Chains worked, but that was a long time ago,bet new systems are better, easier to put on and off
