2nd Generation Spare Tire Consensus from Salvage Yard
2nd Generation Spare Tire Consensus from Salvage Yard
Hello Everyone,
Sorry to post this question again. What are the the approved spare tires/wheels? I understand that the approved spare tires at Detroit Tuned and Way Motor works are the best. But, pretty steep for $130 with shipping for something a may never use . So, that is why I'm looking at Salvage for $50 is.
All the posts that I have searched say that 4x100 Chevy Cobalt, certain Honda Fit, and miatas will work. But, then there are some posts second guessing the options. It also concerns me that certain specs don't match up. Example on the Cobalt spare the hub bore is different by 0.5mm and the lug size is a bit different. Does this not matter because it's so minimal? Especially for short trips to get repaired.
Please no slime and AAA comments. I don't want to depend on slime because of the extra cleaning charge and it can ruin the sensor. I don't want to wait around for AAA.
I'll pay the extra money to be right, but if I can save some money I would like to do that.
Thanks!

You are looking for a wheel that has 4x100 bolt pattern.
Early model year Honda Fit 2007-2009 is fine as well as early model year Miata.
Which MINI year and model do you have? R56 base Cooper?
You can check with Way Motor works to get the correct specs for a salvage wheel for less. No reason why a salvage wheel won't work for you as long as the tire rubber is OK and will hold air. Just cover it up in a bag to keep it clean.

When you factor in it's been mounted and balanced, $130 is great deal, plus no guess work at the junk yard where the spare tire could be 7+ years old, and per industry standard, no longer viable to use especially if it sits in your MINI for another 3 before use....
I bought a compact spare from Waymotorworks after being stranded in 100+ heat with a failed valvestem that no tire repair kit could fix. Road side assistance in that desolate area was a three hour wait. Lucked out out with Tyreshield and a good motoring buddy and limped to a repair. Way's price was the best I could find from any trusted source at the time. I too had researched the salvage spare from other makes and wasn't totally confident that it would fit. So finally I took the safe and prudent route and bought new specific to the R53 that provided absolutely no worries. I looked at this purchase as an insurance policy that will more than pay for itself if ever used. I have never gone on the cheap for what they paid for their MINI and it's upkeep, never bought used parts, used tires, nor bought cheap gas-- non toptier. So might as well follow suit with the purchase of a new worry free spare tire that could be more than priceless if ever needed. Remember it only costs ten percent more to go first class. On the plus side if you ever you sell your MINI, you can easily resell the spare here on NAM and recoup most of your investment. Now, that aspect of our motoring is a non issue. Good luck.
