TPMS Question

Hi Guys,
I bought a 2008 Mini Cooper S in October; the TPMS sensors weren't working, as the owner told me beforehand.
I've been looking for the sensors and I've found a few on a few different websites, but the prices range from $40 to $100 (each).

Can somebody point me in the right direction?
Which ones work best with my MINI?
Where can I find the cheapest ones?

Thanks in advance.

Check out Craigslist, sometimes you will find that someone has sold off a car but got stuck with a fully functional set of wheels, tires and sensors.

Around 2008 is when MINI made TPMS sensor stock: Here is the info.

https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...-question.html

They changed in 9/2009.

The Huf ones are the same manufacturer as the Genuine MINI ones and come with the stems included. Also Free ship.

Thanks again, those are quite a bit more money than I was looking to spend. I found these on Amazon and they are almost half-price:
Amazon.com: DORMAN 974-079 Direct-Fit Tire Pressure Monitoring System Sensor: Automotive Amazon.com: DORMAN 974-079 Direct-Fit Tire Pressure Monitoring System Sensor: Automotive

Watch those universal form amazon, some don't communicate with the MINI system. Also amazon does not know MINI parts and year splits as the changed the frequency on those in 9/2009

Maybe it's just the batteries

If your TPMS doesn't work, it may just be the batteries in them. They don't last forever. Replacing the batteries should be a lot cheaper than replacing the sensors.

I agree that it might be cheaper, but it's tricky.
Let's say I somehow find out which batteries they use and get them, then drive all the way to the shop and have them replace the batteries or (get the sensors out so I can do it), then it turns out the sensors are actually broken, I will still have to pay those guys for the work they did; then buy the new sensors and pay them again to replace them?

I don't believe that those batteries are a simple swap item. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Oops

Well they SHOULD be replaceable. Thank our government for making us have these darn things. I would recommend a good tire guage and ignore the light, at least until the state inspection comes around...

I think it is meant to save fuel. With runflats it very well might also save a few lives.

Runflats? Really?

So you actually like the runflats? I've never owned any, but from all I read, they are universally despised and replaced with non-run flats as soon as they wear out. Runflats seem to again be another government idea run amok. Car makers are forced into higher MPGs and reducing weight by deleting the spare is one way they do it.

I don't think the government is responsible for runflats which are not required if no spare is provided. Porsche, BMW, and MINI all provide mobility kits for cars without runflats or spare tires, and the kits weigh less than the added weight of four runflats.

Nor are runflats universally despised. I despise them, but many posters here on NAM do not.

Until we stop going to war over oil, I will continue to support higher mileage targets. YMMV.

Pro Choice

I support people making their own decisions. Runflats for those that want them, conventional tires for those that don't. I support TPMS as an OPTION, for those who don't care to use a tire guage, not forced down our throats.

So do I, but I prefer to be accurate about it. We are the government. Only we can improve it.

TPMS is very helpful. I just wish it was so darn expensive since you have to replace the sensors every few years.

Are TPMS sensors required? Is there a way to disable it?

I check my air pressure frequently, just like my oil, so it seems like an un-necessary feature.

Required if you don't want the light, Its just stays on or you would have to get a third party software to code it out.

They're not required, but extremely recommended as a safety feature.
You can't check the tire pressure manually while you're driving. That's what these are for.

@Val_P -- agreed. It is an excellent safety feature. I suppose I'm projecting the fact that I'm in the process of buying used replacement wheels and being a little bit of cheapskate.

@ECSTuning -- No wonder I like you. We share the same first name!
