purchasing new wheels!
When one wants to order new wheels for his R56S, what kind of precautions/specs must he be aware of so that the new wheels will comply to fitting the mini?
Also, incase there will be an upgrade with coilovers, is there any change those coilovers might be very close touching the wheels?

Brakes , if the are JCW or aftermarket , those will narrow the selection, bit it can be made up with spacers dependent on the wheel barrel. If you have stock Cooper S brakes all 16" MINI wheels are higher will fit. But when you lower you car you have to worry about 17" and 18" or higher rubbing dependent on how low you are. What is the set up on his R56 S , stock ?

Well right now i am stock yes, but after i get the coilovers, i might give a try on lowering, but nothing too low!
Regarding the wheels though, is it possible they might create any kind of fitting issues and if so, what kind? What will i have to be looking for?

I would put it down on the height you want then see what will fit . What coilovers ?

Well play it safe with NM or Genuine MINI wheels with 17 or 18" . Unless your are really lowered , then I would worry.

If you go with other aftermarkets with crazy offsets or larger sizes then you might rub or they might stick out too much, or rub the strut.

It is really hard to figure out as there is no perfect formula as every brand of wheel and tire will have different specs.
We have been happy with the Enkei wheels

The 17x7.5 you see means the rim is 17 inch diameter, and 7.5 inches wide.

For a 7.5" I'd suggest Et40- 45 seems to be the sweet spot.
For 7" widths ET35-45 work. Anything below ET40 may require fender lip modification.
Wheel design is critical for allowable offset. You may have two wheels ET37 for example, one may fit great and the other may not clear your brakes based on spoke profile.
The tire size you select has a lot to do with rubbing possibilities. Depending on how low you go, and how much camber correction your using, you could possibly rub. The introduction of the additional negative camber from lowering will actually create less possibility of rubbing on the outer fender lips.
I agree with Way that Enkei makes some really great products. We offer all 3 lines they make, Performance, Tuning and Racing series. Something for every budget. Tirerack has plenty of wheels to fit your S. You can check them out here. Everything we list fits the car, with exception of fender mods covered above.
