Changing to winter tires

I have 205/45R17 Continental DWS XL non-runflats on my 2006 Mini S right now. I want to get smaller diameter dedicated non-runflat tires and am interested to hear what others have chosen? I would like to be able to put chains on the MINI in extreme snow conditions since I will be going over 3 mt passes to visit my daughter in Helena MT.

If you go to tirerack.com and input your 06 MCS and select 16" winter wheels and tires you will get something that will fit and provide good snow capabilities.

If you have non JCW front brakes you can also choose 15" wheels and tires.

You should be able to put chains on any of these OEM sized winter tires.

Was your MCS built before or after July 2006, if after then you have TPMS on each wheel.

For example-

You can choose 195/60-15 or 195/55-16 winter tires or even 205/45-17 but generally a more narrow tire will cut through deep snow better.

I picked up 195-60-16's for the OEM 16" wheels for my 08 MCS. I run 17's with 205-45-17 as summers. Got the winters for ski season as I'm going to use the mini as my main ski trip car this year as it gets close to double the MPG as my SUV.

I got the Blizzak WS60. Not installed yet, but they look like they will do the trick!

Dunlops Nice

I have used Dunlop WIntersports on my AWD Audi with great results. Great in the snow, quiet, good handling, good wear and much cheaper than the Michelin$.

I have Dunlop winter sport on my X3 and I like it a lot. For the Cooper I ordered the Bridgestone Blizzak WS70 today from Tire rack.
