Repainting Wheels

So a guy in my local MINI club was giving some wheels away for free. They are S-lites. The clear coat was chipping off. Other than the paint, they are perfectly fine.

I started to scuff the wheels to repaint them and on one of them I bought Aircraft Stripper to try and strip the paint. After one coat of the stuff the clear and first base coat were removed. It seems like there are a ton of layers of paint on these things. Im not to keen on having them sandblasted because I really don't want to spend that much money on them. Powdercoating is also not an option for me.
Is paint stripper a good way to go or should I just scuff them up with sandpaper?
Also, any feedback on painting wheels in general would be great!

Welcome to the forum!

I suggest looking back in the history of our tire and wheel forum, and also use the the search function to look up previous threads.

There have been many good repaint threads here!
