Seems that last lapping day of the season has killed my rotors, all of them need replacing and are beyond machining. My feeling, at least for the fronts, was that the Ferodo DS2500 were too much for the stock disks and I was able to get the system to temperatures that the stock disks could only dream of and then didn't cool them gently. I've got three options:

1) MINI Pads and MINI Disks front and back (get new ferodo next season)

Approx Cost:
Front: $350cdn
Rear: $300cdn

Total: $650cdn

2) Mintex pads with power slot rotors front and rear. (New Ferodo for next season)

Front: $289us
Rear: $240us

Total: $538us (~$700cdn)

3) Suck it up and tap into my line of credit and go with a big brake kit:

a) Tarox $1795.95 Front $625.95 Rear (~$3250cdn)
b) StopTech $1695 Front $240 Rear (~$2600cdn)

Problem with the big brake kit, aside from astronomical cost, is the ability to fit them under the wheels. Tarrox offers an option of smaller disks to fit under 16" wheels. While StopTech don't fit under 16" and don't fit under the stock 17" and several aftermarket 17. I've got aftermarket 17's now and have 17" MINI wheels in my garage. Would the StopTech fit the stock wheels with wheel spacers? This gets even more expensive for the summer when I'd have to get 17" wheels for the autocross/track with some R-Compounds.

The difference in price between option 1 and 2 is close enough that it would be stupid to go back to MINI brakes. The differnce between option 2 and 3 is around $1900cdn which is quite a leap! Option 3 I'd be hard pressed to ever surpass on lapping days and should last me a long long time.

Thoughts? Opinions?

Paul

Speed costs money, how fast do you want to go?

No, honestly, if you are running on tracks-go big or stay home, the performance gains of opposed piston calipers should be enough to make you switch, not to mention the stopping power of the bigger rotors; plus the fact that they are designed to handle the heat of race-type driving.

I would pick:
Mintex pads with power slot rotors front and rear

and add Stainless steel brake lines and upgraded brake fluid with a higher boiling temp.
The Mintex Reds are only for street but there are many other racing Mintex that can be used for track only or some street and track. Try Helix13.

I've ordered powerslot rotors front and rear and will be using Mintex Red-Box for the winter. I'll choose a new pad or stay with the Ferodo for next seasons track events.

Randy has also mentioned that he's working on a big brake kit that would fit under 16" wheels which I'm interested in. This way I can use 16" wheels for my R-Compounds and 17" for the street.

Cheers,

Paul
