TPMS from R53S to R56S

I'm looking into purchasing a set of R92 16in "Fin" rims and tires from an '06 R53S and I'm wondering will the TMPS still work correctly on my R56S using the TMPS sensors in the R53S rims? Any advice or recommendation is greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

As far as I know, they will not work. Reason (if I remember correctly) the sensors from R53's up until Jun of 06 monitors tire rotation to sense if it is missing air. From Jun 06 on up it measures the actual tire pressure. You can buy the sensors from Tire Rack, they sell the correct ones and they are the lowest on price. Most places have them listed as model year 2007 on up. Hope this helps!

Correct me if I'm wrong but there are no sensors in the R53 wheels. I believe that the "sensors" actually only measure the rotation of the wheels and if they are off by a percentage then the "alarm" is tripped.

While you can buy sensors from Tire Rack or any MINI dealer, you have to make sure that your wheels have a place for the sensors to mount. I think wheels that are compatible have a flat area where the sensors fit. Depending upon how old the wheels are, they might not be compatible.

There's always the option of running without the sensors which isn't all that bad.

It was mid 07 when MINI went to the in the wheel sensor mandated by the Feds.

True. The first R56s didn't have the sensors.

You will have to transfer the sensors from your R56 wheels, or purchase new sensors. Fitting new style sensors on R92 Fin rims shouldn't be a problem.
