ET 40 vs ET 48

I am considering purchase of a Koenig Britelite wheel, 17X7 ET40, the OEM s-lites are 17x7 ET 48 I think. The weight is 17.2 vs 25.1, but what does ET mean and what will it translate to how the car handles? Are there other considerations?

offset

ET is offset. Someone else can probably give a more technical explanation, but the lower the offset, the further out the wheels will sit. Generally a lower offset wheel will be more flush with the fender and thus look and handle better, but you're more susceptible to curbing. Too low of an offset can cause rubbing.

17x7 et40 will fit Mini, sticking out about 3/8th of an inch further than stock.
