Brake Change
Brake Change
I have a 2003 Cooper with 48k on it.
Dealer tells me that it will cost $1200.00 for a brake job, replacing all four pads at once. My question: Replacement of these pads is straight forward just like all other pads? They looked at the wear limits and they were all 7. I forgot to ask them what the 7 stood for. Any clues?
Thanks,
Carlos

my dealer quoted $650 when i needed brakes for the first time...
Just look down the brake disc to spot the pad. If the pad material is thinner than the backer plate that it's mounted to, it's time to replace the pads.
At 48k miles, you are at the teetering edge of needing new rotors. A lot depends on how hard you drove the car and how your current rotors look. You aren't supposed to turn down MINI rotors, so you have to replace 'em.
New rotors from Texas Speedwerks: $200
New high performance pads: $150
0.9L ATE Brake fluid: $15
Total for parts: $365
If you are handy at all with tools, you can do this yourself very easily. If you want to make a run to Dallas during our next club DIY day, I'd be glad to show you how. There are some awesome instructions here on NAM, too.

PS: The 7 probably stands for 7 milimeters... 7/10 of a centimeter. If it's the case that they are all at 7mm, you are due for a change soon, but I wouldn't be panicked unless I had a big road trip coming up soon or had a track day next weekend.

Looking at the previous maintenance history all pads were replaced at 19k.
Let me know where you all meet for the DIY day and I will come down, if not for the brakes but to meet everyone and learn. I used to attend to meeting like those during my BMW Motorcycle riding days.
Thanks for the info,
Carlos

Carlos,
Come on over to our website... there are lots of events happening in Dallas (Jan-March is usually pretty quiet, but we have monthly meetings with 30-40 MINIs at each one). We hang out at www.metroplexmini.org

Thanks for the invite! I will look at the calendar and plan accordingly.
I look at one of the Mini links I have and Minimania ( I believe it was) offers a complete brake kit for $365.00 which BTW includes the items you listed in the previous entry.
Hope to meeting you at the next meet and thanks for the advice.
