R84s: Does model yr. affect wheel color?

The wheel repair shop is still having significant difficulty color-matching my wheel while doing some minor repairs.

I've been asked to find out what model year MINI the wheel came from...they said the wheel color is based on the model year.

Of course I've never heard of such an explanation...a facility the size of Oxford surely wouldn't waste money changing wheel color for the same wheel model year-after-year...would it?

I'm pretty much at the point that I'm considering asking the shop to repaint all four wheels so they would at least match! They've had my wheel for almost a month and will now be making a 4th attempt.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

i would just let them paint all 4, if you have that option.

I don't see any color difference between the R84s on my wife's '05 and my '06 (silver).

hmmm...does the shop pocket more $$$ if you paint all 4??? I didn't even know the silver wheels were painted. If the colors are reasonably close, once you put the wheels back on the car, how could you even tell? Different angles, different lighting, a sprinkling of brake dust, a little road grime, who would ever know? Or is the shop using some filler material that doesn't match the wheel's color?

If you do all 4, you might want to compare the cost of a powder-coat application versus a baked paint.

You might find the powder-coat works to your benefit, find a specialty shop in your area. Some of your bigger wheel shops might know of someone.

Just a thought. A friend recently did his 02's wheel with a nice powder-coat.

If they don't get it right this 4th time, I'm going to ask that they do the other three wheels so that the set matches.

It wouldn't cost me a thing...they've had my wheel for a month and I've had to spend a lot of time & gas driving back & forth due to miscommunication between he & his wife/kid...so doing the other three wheels for free would be a good solution to a bad situation.

They are THE shop that all the dealerships in the area use...so I'm a bit disappointed that there have been so many *issues* with what should've been a simple repair.

In addition to the details outlined in the link below, I had to drive out to his place twice this past weekend because his phone was disconnected.
