Symptoms of sticking caliper

Hello, I was just wondering what the symptoms of sticking caliper are. I hear an intermittent screeching sound from the brakes which is really strange b/c I'm not even stepping on the brakes when I hear the sound. And also could a sticking caliper wear the brake pads down faster? B/c I think the pads need to be changed anyway. Thanks.

Sticking Caliper

Two easy test.

1. Drive the car to a slight incline. Put in neutral or push on the clutch pedal. Do not use the brakes. See if it will roll without resisting.

2. Jack up the car (1 wheel at a time). With car in neutral, without brakes or parking brake, see if you can easily rotate tire. If a caliper is sticking, you'll feel resistance.

If you are going to put pads on anyway make sure to test all 4 wheels for dragging. If you have a dragging one I'd bet it's a rear.

If you do find a sticking caliper. the pads will almost surely be worn. If it's in the rear do both rears, same for the front. Be sure to flush system with new fluid. I just did the pads on the front of my 02 MCS (rears were fine) and the caliper pistons moved easily. I change fluid yearly. Another posibilty would be the parking brake not releasing all the way. Keep us posted. You'll get to the bottom of it.
