I'm starting to look into refreshing the suspension on my 148K mile '05 MCS. Most things are straightforward, but for the rear mounts I see either complete mounts or rebuild kits such as this one from ECS Tuning:

Does anyone have any experience with these rebuild kits or am I better off just buying new mounts?

 

I have a hard time imagining the metal plate/mount wearing out. I didn't even replace the foam pieces when I swapped my shocks, the mount and foam inserts looked fine, so I just reused them. I think if you're not having any noise coming from them you're probably fine with just the foam bits.

 

Put in Koni FSD shocks into my R53 2 years ago June, all new OEM parts otherwise....Spring pads, bump stops, the works. Used OEM foam pads and three failed sets later finally put Powerflex urethane ( yellow ) bushings in on top a few days ago.

The OEM foam pads squished down to almost nothing allowing the top of the shock shaft to bounce and chirp in the metal sleeve, ruined it.

The feel of the car is back to what I had hoped for when I did the new shocks, and if anything there's a better feeling of "connectedness" that was lacking before.

I spent a small fortune and a lot of time chasing clunks and weird noises from the back end, all gone now and the fun meter is firmly back in the green.

Just my two cents, but I'd never use those foamies again.

I just finished up my suspension rebuild last week. At 85,000 miles, I was very surprised at the condition of the OEM parts. The foam parts of the rear mount looked brand new. I replaced them with poly bushings anyway, but I'm saving them for a rainy day. The top hats shouldn't need replacing unless rusted or damaged. They're pretty heavy duty.

 

I used the rebuild kit from ECS when I did my shocks last spring.

 

I would inspect those shock top bushings before you decide anything, if they're still in good shape there's no need to replace them, but I have also seen them collapse on cars that are driven harder than the average car causing clunks.

I changed mine out when I rebuilt the suspension 3 years ago, went with the Powerflex shock top bushings, obviously no noticeable improvements but who passes up an excuse to upgrade to poly bushings?
