Will R56 rear endlinks work on steel R53 trailing arms? I'm thinking of doing the aluminum trailing arm conversion in the future and don't want have to buy end links twice or grind down the mounting point on the aluminum arms. I think the R56 endlinks have a longer mounting bolt at the trailing arm. Will they bolt up to the steel R53 arms, or will the nut bottom out before proper torque, or will they stick out too far and interfere somewhere?

If R56 endlinks don't fit, will stock R53 endlinks still work for a mildly lowered car with a Hotchkis comp sway bar until I decide to do the conversion?

Yes you can put R56 end links on the R53 trailing arms we've done it a few times.
Also when you do the trailing arm swap you will need these washers for the rear struts.
