Coopercrap lift ... works fine?

I've been looking at options to raise the car (Mini R50) lately, and am a bit confused.

On one hand you have the Coopercrap lift (2") which seems to work just fine. Haven't seen any complaints online. Seems to be a bolt on thing, and the car drives fine (after an alignment, presumably).

On the other hand, dirt rally guys are going crazy trying to get some extra travel ... is it because they want to over that 2" threshold? Or because they want travel not just lift? ... or is it because the Coopercrap lift just sort of works, but kinks driveline and overextends things in the process?

On the other other hand, why not use a coilover kit ... using longer springs and shocks (by said 2" which seem to be fine with the coopercrap kit) and have a reasonable compromise?

(why raise a Mini? Because winter is 6 months long and we have terrible roads)
