Drive Axle (inner joint)

I have a early 2004 Mini Cooper S. I have pulled both axles to change the cv boots, and according to the Bentley 2002-2004 service manual (page 310-7) the inner cv joint with tripod spherical bearing has a retaining spring under the bearing in the outer race. My axles do not have the springs. My inner cv joint-outer race have wear marks at the bottom from the bearings. Does anyone know anything about this or is the Bentley manual wrong. I need to know if there are springs or not in the axle as I would like to put my car back together.

Springs or No Springs that is the question.
