Rear sway bar upgrade = Fixed ARB bushing clunk ?

Hi all,

So I am experiencing the rear suspension clunking issue on my 28k miles old 2010 R56S. If you do not know about this issue, look for ''ARB R56 bushing''.

Anyways, this issues bugs me the most, I actually think it's embarassing when I have passengers, to have suspension clunks. This will be the second time I replace the bushings and think it's very annoying to have to do this every 15k miles. First time I simply replaced the bushings with OEM bushings.

As I am also interested in improving the performance, I thought it may be a good idea to change the whole rear sway bar. Knowing that the sway bar will come with new bushings I know that it would solve the issue at least temporarily. But i'd like to know if I'll be adding some lifespan to the bushings using aftermarket bushings or will I keep having to change them every 15k miles.

How did you permanently fix this issue ?

Are you sure it is the sway bar bushings? Check the nuts on the endlinks that connect the sway bar end to the strut. I suspect what happened is when you replaced the sway bar bushings, you also removed the end links and then the nuts got tightened down when you reassembled everything, which was the actual cure. Now one of them has loosened up again and is clunking. Also the ball joints in the endlinks can go bad, but at 28K miles that is doubtful.

When I installed my 22mm RSB, after a few months the nut on the endlink loosened a tiny bit and it clunked unbearably. All I had to do was add a little bit of Loctite Blue and tighten it back up. This is a quick, simple, and cheap thing to try to see if it cures the problem.

Of course you can always use this as an excuse to upgrade your RSB to something fatter and make a huge improvement in handling. It's a bit more work than just replacing the bushings but not hard at all, I got mine done in 2.5 hours.

failed stock bushings isn't a common problem as I think I've only done that maybe twice in the last 12yrs.
A new Hsport rear sway bar would come with poly bushings that would be stronger than the stock rubber bushings so if that is your issue the new bar kit will solve it.
We recommend the Hsport bars as they have the best bushings that actually hold the grease in a grease channel inside the bushing to keep them quiet.

Agree, look at your stock end links. My 2010 MCS had a horrible clunk sound as soon as I installed my RSB. The solution was a set of adjustable end links from Way.

I had a clunk too, I thought I had a bad end link, but after retorquing the end link nuts it went away. It seems they may back off over time, so Loctite would be good to use as squawskibum mentioned!
