Suspension Brake Bedding In?
Brake Bedding In?
I just installed EBC Sport front rotors and Red Stuff pads and have a question about bedding them in. EBC says it can take up to 1K miles, but how do you know when they've finished the process? I'm guessing, but is it when you no longer see the cross hatching on the rotors and the wear pattern is smooth and even? At 300mi. I've had no squeaks or other noises, the pedal feel just keeps getting better all the time, that cross hatching is nearly gone and the wear pattern is smoothing out. Haven't had to brake really hard yet, but I'm using the brakes as much as possible at varying speeds. Am I getting close?
You can take a pad out and look at it. When they are new they have that bevel cut so that only the middle third of the pad is used. As it beds in, the contact patch gets larger. The feel gets better because the useable area is getting larger. If the whole pad is being used you are there. It's a little more complicated than that because there is some temperature cycling that needs to take place but from how you described I think you should be good to go as long as the whole pad is being used.

Checked the pads like you said and the bevels on the leading and trailing edges are now gone with the pads in full contact. Cross hatching appears about 3/4 gone, too, so I guess I'm about there. Thanks again!
