Steering Rack Issue?

Hiya,

I have an 06 R53 MCS which unfortunately I had a little bump in about 6 months ago, where I understeered going around a roundabout too fast, and slid sideways into a kurb!

I got a pretty hefty repair bill and these are the bits that were changed:

Left strut
left lower control arm
left wishbone
left wheel hub / bearings
left track rod end
wheels

Since then, I have had a slight vibration when turning right. I can feel it through the floor of the car, by my feet. I have had it checked numerous times by garages and they are saying that my steering rack has a little bit of play in it - which they think is causing the vibrations when turning right.

I am also getting very bad brake judder. I have new disks and new pads so it cant be a warped disk (as this happened with previous brakes too) - I feel this could be related to the vibration.

Steering racks are quite expensive, I just wondered if anyone had any ideas as to what this problem could be before I fork out a lot of money on a rack and install time.

The vibration can be heard most at 60mph+ and the noise gets faster as the car gets faster, although it isnt constant - it will vibrate..... then stop.... then vibrate.... then stop etc. This speeds up as the car speeds up

Thanks for any help!

Seeing as how they already replaced most everything there, the steering rack sounds to be the cause. I take it that all of the ball joints and the bushing on the left front were replaced already?

Other things:
Are the front swaybar end-links ok? Are the bushings for the swaybar still good? Was the steering knuckle fine? (the part that the hub bolts to, and that the strut pinches into, and that is then held by the outer ball joint and manipulated by the tie-rod)

I dont think anything other than the above list was replaced mate. Thats the "job details" sheet I was given by the garage anyway.

I cant answer any of the other points you mention but have printed off your message and will take it with me to the garage for them to inspect those bits - thank you for that
