Fitting Rear Anti-Roll Bar

Hi Guys,

Im looking at getting either an Alta rear anti-roll bar (19mm) or a H-Sport in 19mm...

First question - which would you reccommend for fast road use and maybe some tracking? Alta vs H-Sport and 19mm vs 22mm?

Next question... how easy is fitting? Is it possible on your own drive without ramps or would it make more sense to get it fitted for around $100?

Cheers

The 19mm is probably sufficient for your needs. Regarding which brand to go with, just check the review section on this site. (Hint: Alta loses)

If it's only going to cost $100 to install, I would pay that, but it depends on how much you value your time. Having a lift is pretty much essential for this install.

I agree, 19mm should be fine for your application. Keep in mind though, I think, H sport is a hollow 19mm vs Alta is a solid 19mm. Solid bar will be stiffer. Check on the H sport I might be wrong.

I installed mine with jack stands. Not hard at all. Fishing the bar through the wire loom was the most difficult step.

Ramps will not work since you need to remove the wheels. If a shop is quoting $100, I would take it. Provided they are reputable.

Do you know if there is a guide anywhere on how to do the install?

I am pretty sure we have not had any problems with our sway bars Veggivet. Are you aware of something I am not?
HERE are the instructions for our 19mm bar. Please let me know if I can be of any more help. Thanks again!

Fitting is easy enough - I've done several in my driveway. You will need a jack and jack stands, though. Personally I'd do the work - it really depends how much you value time vs money. In fact, fly me over there, and I'll fit it for free.

Too bad Minspeed is no longer around. I have one of his 19mm bars and like it a lot. What got my attention is it is a solid bar and the ends are pinched not welded. I always like this setup for strength. I have been informed that the welded ends do change the property of the bar some and offer a little more play. No proof of this but it sounded plausible.

The part of the bar that does the "bending" is not affected by the weld. The heat on the welded part of the bar does not penetrate more than an inch past the weld. What to you mean by "a little more play"?

Going by what I was told that a welded bar could have a little more flex than a non-welded one. As I stated I have no idea about this personally so I took it with a grain of salt. Also, i had already purchased the bar I have so it was not to influence what I bought and was not told to me by the party selling it.

Honestly, to me I most likely would never notice and I am just happy with the bar I have.

I have a 19mm Alta bar and when I recieved it new the paint was chiping off both of the locating washers and one of the washers was bent. I had to straighten the washer and I sprayed rust primer on the bar where paint had chipped off. I suspect the damage was due to poor packaging. I have heard of other people having the same problem. Otherwise the bar works fine. I did replace the Alta supplied bushings with Hotchkis greasable bushings.

Go with the H-sport bar. You can go 19 or 22 mm (aka 25mm comp). We find the 22mm works better on the S. And they are hollow and light weight, which in turns help HP.

Let me know how i can help.

Where did you get them? I've got a 22mm and had to re-grease it once. I'd rather not have to again!

You can order them from Hotchkis. You have to call them because the parts are not listed individually on their website. Cost was $20.

All aftermarket swaybars (with polyurethane bushings) will require periodic greasing. The H-Sports have the Zirc fitting already installed in the bracket for easier lubrication.

Exactly. I suppose I should have said I don't want to have to remove the brackets and bushings in order to grease them.

Sorry Hotchkis doesn't have a 22mm bushing. Their comp bar is equal to the 22mm in stiffness, but because it's hollow the bar and bushing is 25.5mm. So you can't adapt them to be used with a different bar. Their 19mm bushings can be, I keep them in stock because of the amount of non hotchkis bars we see needing them replaced.

Go Hotchkis on the swaybar and you won't look back.

I have not used the TSW bar but seems like a great option. If I was purchasing a new bar I would go with the Hotchkis or TSW.

I'm on a Hotchkins 19mm bar and never had a prob.I grease it at oil changes and general service with Evinrude marine grease but it's never even squeaked, grease nipples are there so it's dead easy to do.
