clock problem

Before I call the dealer, has anyone ever had a problem like this?

The clock in my speedo has gone nuts. For a while it wouldn't move off of 2:33. Then I reset it an hour ahead today for the spring ahead thing, and it wouldn't move again. Then, when I got back in the car later, it was about 50 minutes ahead of the right time, but not advancing when I am driving the car.

Have I done something wrong? Or has the clock just simply blown a gasket? Will the whole speedo unit be replaced? Will they set my mileage and countdown-to-service to where it is on the current speedo?

yep the whole speedo will have to be replaced.

I've already had mine replaced once because the clock kept gaining 1-2 minutes/day. Unfortunately, the new clock is just as wonky as the first one. I'm hesitant to get it replaced yet again because the service guys left some minor gouge marks in the dash when they replaced the first one.

don't worry about the mileage and countdown service info because that's stored elsewhere.

I finally had my wife's clock replaced as it was gaining time - they did a nice job replacing the speedo and the clock keeps time as it always should have.

To set the the clock, depress and hold the button that cycles the display between the clock and the trip mileage. When the numbers flash, release the button. It will allow you to set 12 or 24 hour time, then it will cycle through allowing you to set the hours and minutes. When the display is showing whatever you want to change (i.e- either the hour or the minutes), pushing the button will change that setting. Release the button and wait until it displays the next item to set.

When I got out to the car this morning, the clock was still ~50 minutes ahead, just as it was yesterday after the attempt-at-resetting debacle. So, just for $#its and giggles, I reset the clock again to the correct time, and GUESS WHAT?! It is now 10 hours later, 6PM, and the time is still correct.

Who knows . . .

yeah i'd say that if the problem comes back take it in and the dealer will replace the entire cluster. there was actually a bulliten for the clocks running fast but nothing for like your application but since there were a bad batch of clock cyrtals maybe your was just REALLY bad lol.

as far as keeping your mileage and service counter accurate. eechan is correct. it will not be totally erased or off but it may be off by max i would say 50 miles. and that is a maximum. most of the time it is only off by a matter of a few miles

Okay, thanks, guys. I'll see how it goes. Hopefully, that was a one-shot (weird) deal.

Don't kid yourself. I was expecting to see Rod Serling any minute while this was happening.

Thanks for the info. I have been looking for this information to see if others had the same problem. I have a 07 with Chrono package that has fast running clock. When I go to the dealer for the first oil change and I can ask to have the clock replaced.

Update to my clock problem. Otto's Mini in West Chester PA replaced a module. The clock now keeps time. After getting home found out some of the trip info is now in metric. Has to go back to the dealer to correct. Range is in km, MPG is now liter per km. Going back next week.

Good to know: I've been noticing this phenomenon for a while now, but hadn't given it too much thought. I'll be heading into the dealer in the next week or two for some other work, so I may as well add this to the docket -- though I'll want to double-check the details of the extended warranty to make sure it's covered.

Hi Zip it looks like your MINI’s clock is just having a typical electronic glitch rather than anything you’ve done wrong. Sometimes the clock circuit inside the speedometer can get out of whack or just stop working right, which would account for the clock jumping forward or freezing. Some local repair shops, such as Metrowest Car Service, have dealt with these problems in MINI instrument clusters before and can determine if it’s just the clock or if the entire speedometer unit needs to be looked at. Have you noticed anything else weird happening on the dashboard, or is it just the clock?
