Blow off valve on the R56
If you want to vent to the atmosphere you can, although you may need to relocate the MAF sensor (if thats what it uses measuring air). A stock setup will always use a BOV that re-circulates in a car like this. Its location w ill be somewhere on the intercooler piping I would imagine.
Say it ain't so!
Please don't go making your new R56 make that annoying PShhhhhtttt sound every time you shift! I have no idea why anyone would want their car to sound like they just stabbed their tire with a switchblade with each gear change.
You want to make your MINI sound like that? Please NO!!!

In short, turbo spooling + BOV = performance to me. Do I want my Mini to sound like that? Absolutely! I waited an extra year for the turbo alone. Cant wait!
Exactly. I've heard some complain about how they don't like the supercharger whine. I've heard others point out how much they dislike gawdy roof graphics. We don't all have to have the same tastes in stuff.
It's your car, do what you want.

but, it's not! just admit you like the sound mate (nothing at all wrong with that IMHO as long as you don't do a ricer fly-by PSSH/PSSH/PSSH revving the motor). there are plenty of full recirc or 50/50 and even remotely adjustable BOV's out now. If you are running a lot more boost then stock, chances are the stock BOV won't hold it.
Now, when you start talking EWG setups, to hell with quiet! a BOV fits right in.

This is not true in all cases. Depending how the car meters the air to give the right mixture, dumping your BOV to the atmosphere can hurt performance. If the intake stream goes from the filter, to a MAF, to the turbo then it knows there is X ammount of air in the system. When the BOV releases the boost that is not needed and it doesnt go back into the intake stream that air was metered into the engine and never out, so the ca rthings it has more air to work with than it really does causing it to richen up the mixture. In cars where this is the case some feel the same after you vent the BOV to the atmosphere but some will stall, stutter and just not want to go because they dont have enough air for the amount of fuel that is being pumped into the engine. Dumping the air back in usually results in better performance as that air is re-used. The only thing a BOV does is releases the pressure in the intercooler/boost stream on deacceleration because that boost is not needed, and in its nature if it is not released it will reverse direction slamming back into the turbo's turbines doing a job on the bearing and turbo itself. The only performace you will see from one BOV to another is whether it leaks boost under pressure when its supposed to be closed.

probably has a diverter valve from the factory.
On my 96 GSX I had the HKS SSQ BOV and it was very loud, like a louder version of the eclipse in fast and the furrious. Friends could hear me from like a mile away haha. That particular BOV cannot leak under boost either how it is designed, its release mechanism is a pull type rather than a push type.
Having a diverter valve is a very good point, I would kind of assume MINI would go this route myself. Good point DrkSilvr!

I am by no means a mechanic, but if there is any way to make the turbo sound like that, I will be doing it to my new one. I love the sound of the BOV, and the turbo itself chirping. Does anyone know if the there is a way to make the turbo chirp and have the BOV sound together. My favorite sound in the world is that of the Porsche 962c from the late 80's, early 90's. It sounded so great, and I have wanted a turbocharged car ever since then, now I have my chance to have that sound in a car I own.
do a search and see if you can find a Porsche 962 sound clip, then tell me that is not a turbo chirp. Anyway, I like to say "chirp" more than "whoosh".
Here is a clip for you:

Tell me that thing isn't chirping!!!!
That is exactly how I want my mini to sound, well, at least the turbo.

thats not really much of a chirping sound? its not really high pitched. its more of like a fluttering sound.
The sounds you guys are describing (whooshing, chirping, fluttering) are all sounds made by the BOV not the tubro, the only other thing that may make a noise that slightly resembles any of these is the wastegate. I didnt listen to the sound clip but I am assuming what you are hearing is them spooling the turbo and either releasing a very small amount of boost through the BOV which will sound different then releasing full boost through it, or a very loud wastegate. The BOV will open anytime you left off the accelerator and there is boost present in the turbo system. I will have to listen to that in a little bit...
if you like chirping you may also like....
TURKEY CALL BOV!
also that "chirping" you are speaking of is compressor surge... nothing to do with what type of BOV...

I looked at some photos of the new turbo...
and it looks like the BOV is a recirculating one built into the turbo housing.
I think....
But I'm not sure...
Don't bet your house on it....

I never said a turbo doesnt make noise
Simply that the whoosh, phsst, chirp or flutter is most likely going to be the BOV or the wastegate. The turbo makes noise yes, although the noise is usually makes is being able to hear the air go through it compressing, I would describe that more of a hissing noise almost. I speak from my experience of several turbo DSM's from stock to heavily modified. I dont consider the wasegate part of the turbo though. I see it as a system on the turbo itself that helps regulate the propper boost and pressure in the system overall. Turbos can be either internally or externally gated, the externally gates ones will make more noise.
Nobody should take this as an arguement, just a discussion (I say that cuz I know how NAM can get). Im no turbo expert but I know my share, although, I would trust Tuls' information over my own in application to a MINI. All my experience comes from DSM's
Does anyone know what size turbo is coming on the R56 anyways? I am guessing something along the lines of a T25 or similar turbo, but much m ore efficient I would guess.
Overall I love the sound of a turbo system working. Some days I do miss my DSM but more than happy with the MINI.
