I Need Help With This One - Check Filler Cap

I would appreciate any input on this one...I have an '03 Mini Cooper ( Not an "S"). A light comes on the dash "Check Filler Cap", I have replaced the filler cap and the light still comes on after running for a while. Can anyone help me. Thanks, Ron

Maybe it wants you to tighten the filler cap?

Not really sure which "filler cap" your light is referring to. If it's the fuel filler cap, heres a wag:

I once had a habit of "topping off" my fuel tank - i.e. continuing to add fuel once the filler nozzle auto stopped (not in my MINI - I've learned since then). The backed up fuel eventually killed a sensor that was in the fuel rebreather circuit which caused a fault in my obc. Didn't know about it until I tried to pass my next DOT emmissions test.

Don't know if that will help, but it's something...

Check the Purge valve in the front of the motor, on the right hand side, when the vehicle is running. [ after about 3 minutes of running] Do you hear it clicking? if not replace it, if so remove the lines from both sides and check to see if any crud falls out. this is the valve that causes the check gas cap to turn on.

Check Filler Cap

Srichs..You had mentioned a smoke test to check for leaks, how do you do it and where do you get the stuff? I got your note on checking the hoses @ the filler cap and will try that. I checked with BMW parts and with a discount the carbon cannister is around $90.00 and would take 3 weeks to get. I will be looking forwards to hearing form you. Thanks for helping me out and trying to save me some money. Ron
