the noise your hearing is clutch dust, generally you'll need a clutch assy. to fix the honk noise when 1st starting off... often the rear main is leaking on the clutch to agravate the condition

Jeez, I hate this , opinions all over the place, Pixie clutch dust ?We have hot modders on this site with 600hp Minis ,with 200 years of experience total, and no one has looked at a clutch or a flywheel and said "there" is the squeak?

Mine was doing it more often just today which seems to point to more than one problem going on.

My 2003 S has been making the screeching sound when starting off cold in 1st for 2 years. My dealer won't repair it under warranty. I see posts by people that have had theirs fixed by the dealer. Please send me your name and the name and location of the dealer that has fixed yours under warranty. I need to reference others to get them to do something. Thanks.

that was just one search using the word "squeak". i'm sure there are other threads. BMW needs to get on the ball and ISSUE A RECALL. come on! this many people with the SAME problem? geez, it's a KNOWN ISSUE! my car has been doing it since about 25K miles... maybe more, maybe less, i don't even remember, it's been making that noise so long. my wife the other day told be she knows when i'm home from work everyday because she hears "scr-r-r-e-e-e-e-k" from the bottom of the driveway. ha ha! there's chris and his funny sounding car!

i'm saving up for an aluminum flywheel and a quality aftermarket clutch. this is one time when i can say i would rather NOT buy an OEM replacement part.

dammit ! i just started researching on this since mine started doing it too and i really hope they will replace mine when i go in tomorrow .

the other thing is that the clutch itself while shifting has gotten a lil bit harder and when the car is turned off and the clutch engaged and released makes this crunchy/squeeky noise , anyone experienced that as well ?

car has 12k btw.

anyone got theirs replaced at universal or any close by dealers with no problems ?

Well im waiting for them to call me today to tell me i can go pick up my cooper, ive spent the last 5 days driving a chevy cobalt and its been horrible.

I dont know if this helps anyone but apparently the noise could also be made by the LSD and apparently that is a issue they know about however i dont have a LSD .

I have. But you can't see anything. The dual-mass flywheel moves internally on launch. There is nothing to see in the clutch or flywheel once it is out of the car on the bench. It will "look" fine.

But the problem is well known on 2002 and 2003 MINIs and knowledgeable dealers change the flywheel as they did to PeeWee 30,000 miles ago and the squeak has never returned. Prestige here in NJ did it for me without hesitation.

My guess is they don't want to do it because it is a BIG job and the flat-rate from MINI might not be to their liking. But rest assured they know the sound and the fix.

Somebody send me a squeaky flywheel and I'll grind/machine or torch it apart to see what's squeaking I'll post photos of the exposed flywheel guts .

well if you're gonna pursue this then make a list for them so they can do all at once . clunk when shifting from 1st to 2nd, rattles about the dash area, squeak when it's cold , windsheild squeal, etc. or if that seems like alot of hassle ; just admit it only cost 20 grand and goes okay and gets decent mileage. then drive it !!!! relax .

well universal mini basically tryed to avoid the problem by saying its a very common thing and we do not fix this problem wich kinda got me pissed off. I dident really get upset or anythin and just told them that i know 100% that other peeps have gotten this fixed and they disbelieved me and told me if i do get it fixed anywhere else , to bring them a receipt so for them to basically get owned.

xbook where did you get yours fixed at ?

and also , when the car is turned off and the clutch depressed and released it makes this odd noise that you hear from the outside off the car. Kind of like a squeeky/spring noise , any clue what that is ?

now seriously the flywheel doesn't squeek, the clutch is what is making the moaning/groaning/squeeking noise, also when your clutch gets down to under 1mm for the rivet head it will make the noise and at this time u will start to get the noise and you'll feel it in the clutch pedal with the crunchy type of feeling. trust me if more of u would come complain about this i would only have to work 3 days a week to match my current pay..

bingo ! thats what i was worried about.

(( when your clutch gets down to under 1mm for the rivet head it will make the noise and at this time u will start to get the noise and you'll feel it in the clutch pedal with the crunchy type of feeling. ))

is that something that would happen at 12k or did i just fry my clutch to early ?

Ok, i got my cooper back , so far the noise seems gone but then again it wasnt out in the cold before i got to it. I have noticed something weird and im not sure if its good or bad, the new clutch seems less stiff, much easyer to push in and out, not sure yet if i like it like this. im sure its great for traffic but how will it affect my car and my driving experience ? anyone know what im talking about ?

I attribute my noise to wet weather... I always hear it around Nov when it starts to rain (or gets colder), I don't remember the sound during the summers. My S is indoors at night.

i think these are hydro clutches, least i'd hope so . so you may still have air in the line giving a mushy feel.

Yes. the original '03 clutches were stiffer than the replacements. It is normal and there is nothing you can do about it. I predict you will forget about it in a couple of days. I did.
