intermittent windows

Anybody had problems with their power windows not working all the time?

There seems to be no pattern as to when they decide not to work. Is there an easy fix?

Have you even had your window motors replaced? Is it both windows or just one? What do you do different to get them to work?

Both windows do it.
Never had the window motors replaced.
They seem to start working for no apparent reason.

To top it off, I just discovered that my warrenty expired 10,000 miles ago. So, this is going to be one of my weekend projects. I am hoping since the windows work now, I can keep them working. Keeping my fingers crossed.

It happened to me and the dealer had to replace the motor.
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but when it happened to me it would wirk off and on but eventually it stopped working all together.
It must be pretty common because when I told the service writer he knew exactly what it was.

this happens to me sometimes. a short term fix would be to hold down the window button and bang above the speaker on the door. that jiggles the motor or something and it starts working

Ah yes. The well known and well documented Mini window motor failure You have my condolences as your warrenty has expired. Fortunately it appears this can be a DIY job from what I've read and heard from people who have done this.

Here's the rub. These motors have been failing at an outrageous rate since the car was introduced. I've had both mine replaced (under warrenty thank goodness) and sometimes they act like they're ready to die again. With this many failures it can only be down to crappo motors to start with, made all the worse by the design which drops the window a bit every time you open the door. This causes premature wear on the armature in just that one spot which causes loss of contact and the window motor to fail prematurely.

I've said it before, if BMW were to be righteous about this, they would install upgraded motors on all Minis whose windows have failed. Free of charge regardless of whether the car was still under warrenty or not. These things are a real bad publicity for the Mini and BMW
