Can the 'burble' be buried?

Okay, I know I'm going to potentially ruffle a few (or more) feathers out there with this thread, but take it easy on me...I am a fellow MINI owner after all.

I have to be honest that the exhaust burble/popping on my '05 MCS drives me crazy. When it sounds like a little rumble, that's okay, but it's the pop pop pop backfire sound that gets on my nerves - especially since I park in a parking garage at work every day and have to hear it amplified.

Since this was 'introduced' on the '05 models, does anyone know if it can be removed? Some way to stop the fuel from being injected into the exhaust? Is this something that can be removed via programming?

I did a couple searches and couldn't find anything on this here on NAM, but I imagine it's out there somewhere.

The dealer told me that its in the 05 MCS's programming. He said that its completley normal. It doesn't bother me a whole lot.

I cant really think of what you could do to fix/change it except reprogram it. But...reporgraming it could have some neg side effects.

That's funny. I was just noticing that i hardly hear my "burble" anymore and miss it so. I was wondering what i could do to bring it back

Since its all computer controlled, I would guess yes, using maybe an 04 ECU and program. I think the 05 ECU is different (and why MTH and others have a hard time hacking it)?

The fix is simple Ditch the MCS for a MC. They don't burble.

Perhaps you should get a hybrid. They don't burble, Part of the time they dont' even run at all.

Interesting though you say you don't like the burble of the MCS exhaust. Do you like the burble of say a big old Gaz Guzzling V8?

V8s don't "burble". They "rumble"

There is no subsitution for cubic inches

If it's related to the ECU programming, send an email to MTH. Ask Volker if he can provide you a software with less backfires...

Hope this helps!

Revert the software OR redo yourself a custom exhuast that is MORE restrictive than the stock system you'll add stealth and quiet the burble.

Or Pulley + HAI and you'll be hearing the SC over the exhaust

Anthoer thing to do is it really only burbles over a handful RPMs, I know it is far less common though still present in the automatics because of operating at different RPMs (each car is different)

Couldn't have said it better myself!

I get jealous every time I drive my wife's SS - now there's a sweet sound!

Thanks for the advice, but I lean more to the performance side than the economy side.

And yes, I much prefer the rumble of a big V8, but it doesn't have to be, as you said, "Gaz Guzzling". My wife's SS is a big V8 that sounds unbelievable, will put your back in the seat, and still get 30 MPG on the highway (thanks to DOD).

But style does play a part as well, hence I drive the MCS.

No Rplacement for Displacement! Ohhrah!

On the burble, I had the stock MCS exhaust on, put on a few custom exhausts, and had to put the stock back on (don't ask!) and the burble is mysteriously no longer there. It may be that you need a few more miles to help out. I hit 70K today on my '05, so you might just have to wear out the exhaust a bit.

The popping has got to be louder on a MCS then a MCSa as my popping has gotten softer as the miles count up and I'm only @ 15k.

Remains to be seen, but ECM systems are a lot better now than they were during the days of the 4-6-8. Personally, I think DOD in a Vette would be awesome considering the car can get 30 mpg without it now. I've read of C4 and C5 owners easily getting into the mid 30's on the hwy.

The fact the 427ci Z06 is rated at 28 mpg hwy is incredible. ...and makes me really wonder why the MCS can only manage a 32 mpg hwy rating...

I've recently insulated my CAI to insure that only cold air from outside of the engine compartment gets to it. One side effect is that the SC whyne is quieted, near to stock airbox sound standards...

As a result I can hear my 1-ball exhaust again. Like others here, I have been observing that the burble is more quiet lately...

Does this suggest that over time the stock-based exhaust systems get quieter, or are there other factors, perhaps like mods, or humidity or air temperature, that are effecting whatever it is that makes the burble?

KC MCS, I share your feelings. My burble is a bit much too. I came from an 02 MC that had a very solid rumbling exhaust thanks to MINIMania, and no burble. It was such a great tone. My 03 MCS is much quieter, which is actually nice too in a different way, until the burble pops between gears. It pops so loud that it almost sounds like a backfire! This is pre 05 programming too, I cant imagine a post 05 programming with my setup. It all adds character though I guess.

I love my burble. I normally take off really fast from stops just so I can then let off the gas & get maximum burble

I agree that it sounds more like a backfire than a burble.

The only mod I have is an ALTA CAI, and to respond to some of the other posts regarding mileage, I just rolled about 9K a couple weeks ago.
