Diagnostic/reset tools and my problem??

Hi,

My wife has a 2005 MIni Cooper S automatic. The car has 3400 miles on it and yesterday it went into limp mode. It was the first real hot day here in TN. The car out of the blue had the EML light come on and went into limp mode. She cut the car off and the EML light cleared but the check engine light remained on. Called the closest dealer service department which is 200 miles away and they said they are having problems with cars in the Southern states during hot humid weather. Does anyone have any details on this problem or know where I can find some information this problem??

I do not want to drive 200 miles to find out what is going on with my car. Also when I change the oil I would like to reset the service computer. What is the best tool for the money. I definitely want to be able to read diagnotstic codes and reset them. I also need to be able to reset service computer when I cange oil. I also have a laptop and if needed I could use it. What tool out there is very reliable and has the best capability for the money. I also have 3 other OBDII vehicles that I would like to be able to use the tool on but the MINI gets priority.
I have read about the following tools:

I have the Actron-pocket scan I got from Pep boys for $80 and have been happy with it. Reads and reset fine.

Oil reset is done though pressing buttons on dash.

I just got the Autoengenuity scan tool for PC and am very happy with it so far. It can connect to all 3 of my vehicles, despite each one having a different communications standard. Check up on them, and if I were you I'd be sure to buy one that can connect to CAN cars, as this will be the new electrical interface standard for all makes after 2008 if I'm not mistaken. Here's their website, we just had a big group buy for them over on mazda3forums, got a pretty nice price on it ($179). A bit more expensive than the pocket scan, but it has some nice datalogging capabilites and a nice slick interface, at least thats what I can tell in the two days I've had mine. . .
