Stock Problems/IssuesDiscussions related to warranty related issues and repairs, or other problems with the OEM parts and software for MINI Cooper (R50), Cabrio (R52), and Cooper S (R53) MINIs.
my '06 MCS has been making a tapping/ticking noise in neutral at idle since 200 miles. I searched around and saw some older threads, which said that it might be a throw-out bearing, clutch, or flywheel issue. Has anyone found a solution to this problem? For a car with less than 1,000 miles on it, the noise is a bit embarassing.
I have the same problem and will have the dealer take care of it later...check out several posts regarding the "throw out bearing" in the transmission.
I have the same issue with my 2005 MCS. I had my first service at the end of last month so I had them check it out. They said the flywheel needed to be replaced. The part is on order, so I can't tell you if it fixed the problem, but here's hoping that it does
I have the same issue too.. sounds like a helicopter.. if I press the clutch, it goes away... I am bout 2500 from 10K service.. they can deal with it then....
I went through heck trying to get this resolved. I noticed it around 7000 miles and it didn't finally get replaced until 18000, because when I'd take it in, it wasn't enough to request a new flywheel. So, I just had to wait and keep driving until the noise got loud enough. I eventually had this replaced about 2 months ago and it's solved the problem. No moe rattle and sitting pretty. With sub 1000 miles, I wouldn't worry too much. You've got TONS of life left on that warranty, not saying ignore the problem, but have patience that this will be fixed. I'd at least take it in now to explain, even if they can't "hear" it the first time in the shop.

The MCS uses a dual mass flywheel - a heavy dual mass flywheel.
The purpose of this unit is to dampen the torsional vibrations from the engine.
Just because the you are hearing noises when the clutch is engaged does not mean you have a tranny problem. It just means that the DMF is not perfoming its dampening duties.
Mini has actually been pretty fair in replacing these units under a TSB. However, these noises do not necessarily mean that the TOB, the clutch or the flywheel is going bad. In most cases it just means that the unit is not performing up to the NVH standards that it was designed to.
A lot of people have gone to lighter flywheels and have inherited this noise as a free side benefit!
I too had this noise develop on my 06' at around 500 miles. Classic replaced the throw out bearing at 10k and the noise was gone... now at 16k the same old noise is back again. I will suggest a new flywheel to them, then clutch then, well hopefully there is no that then.
Took mine in today for other things and told them about this noise. Told me they were going to replace the flywheel. SA said it was a 10 -12 hour job. Now that would be a large labor bill.

Your SA loves that, because the dealership gets to bill MINIUSA. Even at the "discounted" rate that MINIUSA pays them, the billable labour is higher than actual labour.
Thanks for all the help, guys. When I go in for my 10k mi. service, I will mention it. For now, I've learned to take my foot off the clutch pedal more slowly when in neutral; sound goes away.
Thanks for the link. Mine sounds rather like a diesel clatter. The noise goes away when I depress the clutch. I've got 1300 miles on my MCS and will have it checked when I go in for my 10,000 mile service.
