Jet Engine under the hood? Or maybe just a really loud fan?

Jet Engine under the hood? Or maybe just a really loud fan?

My wife just pulled up in the Mini and it sounded like a jet engine under the hood.
I think there must be a fan or something making more noise than it should.
Or is this normal?
Maybe I could record the sound and post it later tonight.

j/k

Its the cooling fan, completely normal, and a very good sign to hear it running.

When I first got my MINI, I thought it sounded like a airlplane driving on the runway. I later found out it was the electic power steering that I was hearing.

Had the same problem: the fan would remain on for about five minutes after shutting down the engine -- yet while running, the engine temp never strayed above the normal halfway point. It happened whenever driving longer than 30 minutes. The dealer checked for problems and ended up reprogramming the computer. Sorry, but I can't recall what the specific error code was.

You should also check the coolant levels when the engine's cold, just to cover your bases.
