Anyone got a good description of where to locate the steering rack boots? or even a picture would be ideal. Also how easy is it to spot if these are filling up with fluid?

Checking your fluid level at the reservoir is the way to determine if any has gone where it shouldn't. Make it a habit to check your fluids each week.

 

There are a few places the steering fluid could go if the reservoir level drops. If the reservoir level drops, then it is time to find out where the leak is occurring and get it fixed.

Does the power steering run off the belt or is it electric? Stupid question i know but am confused.

The Electro Hydraulic steering assist pump is located just aft of the engine. The Power Steeering cooling fan sucks road air and debris to cool it.

although i dont know about debris cooling the pump. so if ma steering is going hard and dangerous to turn with no turning circle. the fluid level is fine. what would you check? have no warrenty

 

mines been out for a year now. hopefully getting it replace this weekend. i got the power steering motor on order. hopefully it will solve the problem

 

sounds like the steering motor is the culprit to me, don't think it costs to much though, hopefully that 's true. let us know the outcome please.

 

i also noticed my pump was leaking where the hose connects to it. btw it's a very slow leak.

 

The first thing I would check is the pump. The first place to check the cost would be the dealer. If the cost is outrageous, hopefully you have a non-dealer mechanic that you trust who can replace the pump at a lower labor rate than the dealer.

from what i have read the pumps are around $700 from the dealer hopefully this is not the case.

 

Sometimes (and this is not always true), dealers will discount their parts pricing to non-dealer shops. If this true in your area, that might help cut the cost. Alternatively, you could try a dealer like Classic MINI that gives a discount on MINI parts to NAM members.

 

Auto Parts Warehouse has the P/S pump for $330.00, $80. core charge.
I tried to call and confirm that this includes the elec motor, but could not hang on the line for one of their reps. It has to be included though, I think that's the main friggin part of the pump.

Thats more like it! I only hope it includes the pump. Personally, I would confirm the motor is part of the package.

 

got the pump changed and including labour (plus they cleaned the car ) for £350 $600. Not too bad
