Alta CAI Too Noisy.... Is there a fix

Hello All,

I installed my Webb motorsports Stage 1 kit this past weekend. It includes the Milltek cat-back, 15% Alta pulley, Iridium 'cold' plugs, Unichip ECU, and Alta CAI. I love everything about it! The power is amazing. Now I know why everyone who shelled out the clams for the JCW are so happy. Car accelerates much more authoritatively.

I was excited about the Alta CAI, as I love the supercharger whine. Reminds me of Hans-Stuck's record run at the Nurburgring in the M3-GTR (search for the video on Google.com). I had heard that it would further increase the s/c sound. One thing I don't care for, however, is all of the additional intake noise. Now, every time I tip-in to the accelerator, I can hear every molecule of air as it passes by the throttle body. At least until the s/c whine masks it.

Do other Alta CAI owners have this same phenomena? Is there any way to minimize it? I have read where other owners switch to a cone-type filter to reduce the noise.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks,
jeffro

there's a cover behind the cone filter that you remove when you install
the alta. you just need to put that back on. then it will only sound
comparable to stock...but i believe you miss-out on the full "COLD"
air intake part.

Being as the HAI is supposed to post some decent gains, not 100% sure how much we are missing from the actual *cold* air. Of course, my Alta intake is still in the box, I have no idea other than internet speculation!

For the back panel that you remove to install the Alta....that will fit with the intake in place? Not to start another OT thread about it, but for my own reasons i want something that gives some more power & sound, but if i find it obnoxious, i would like the option to tone it down some.

thank you!

Get a JCW intake? It has a flap that opens above ~ 4000 RPM, so that you only get 'intake whoosh' when you're pushing it.

in my post, '"i believe" is the key word here.

The works box is probably your best bet....

OR maybe the Dinan. both have more containment of the filter....

I've heard the whistle noise goes away with time as the filter gets dirty. When you clean it, the noise returns for a while. I wonder if fitting a cotton K&N style filter on the Alta intake would block more noise...

Take it off and put on your stock airbox......

I thought the purpose of the CAI was to increase HP and also get that cool whine under power.

Been doing lots of on-line research as my Alta is in the mail, a whistle should mean you need to check you install and make sure that htere are no leaks anywhere

Don't use throttle, cut holes in your floor and go flintstones style. I wouldn't give mine up!

Actually, you can put the rear partition back in place and still use the Alta CAI. This will cause a bit of a loss, but it will still make more power than the stock airbox.

Hope that helps!

Randy,
So have you proven the Alta actually makes more hrrrrumph (power)? I have mine and really don't notice it immensely (seat of the pants feel)....

Thanks,
azminied

I just put my Alta in today and immediately noticed a (seat of the pants) difference. The car responds much quicker to throttle input. I like the sound to! Can't wait for the pulley...

Alta CAI noise (or music) is awesome!

It makes the supercharger sound great, and produces a nice improvment in HP too.

Just get used to it, and I'm sure you'll enjoy soon enough!
