Rev limit question...

Is the Mini's rev limiter a function of the fuel or ignition cutoff? Thanks

Great question.

I have heard from a tuner that it does pull back the fuel, which does terrible and crazy :impatient things with the A/F ratios. I was told that with my twincharged engine being so much more boost, that I don't dare touch it on the rev limiter, and if I do hit it, to immediately get off the limit and allow some fuel to get back into the system.

It doesn't make much sense to me that the MINI engineers would program the ECU like this. It make more sense to cut the ignition allowing the fuel to continue to flow, but unburnt. This would allow the fuel to continue to lubriate and cool the cylinders and other associated parts.

However, I'd like to see what it does using some sort of datalogging on a stock MCS (certainly won't use my twincharged car for this test).

Anyone know of where to get a datalogger for the MINI???

neither.. it will just keep bouncing.. now the speed governor in order to achieve you have to be in 5th, and then shift into 6th..

My question was brought about with regards to the dangers of using Nitrous at the redline. If the rev limiter is achieved through fuel cut-off, that would be dissasterous with the N2O flowing...BLAMMO!!! I think a MSD Digital RPM Window Switch would be a nice addition:smile:

Anyone experienced reaching the rev limit with a Nitrous system?

Sid, as far as I know it's an ignition cut-off, not fuel. I highly doubt that any new car would limit it's revs by starving the cylinders with fuel and risk almost certain imediat damage.

I certainly may be wrong, but I really hope not as I hit the limiter a whole lot.

Remember, we're not it carberator days any more.

If the ECU tells the injector not to squirt, there's NO gas in the cylider. So it's not a traditional lean condition. I don't know about the Mini, but many rev limits drop a cylinder from squirting, so you're down in power.....
But truth be told, I haven't logged the Mini through a rev limit to see what's really going on, and the comments about nitrous systems are spot on, could be real problems.....

well from what i understand since we have the wonderfull wire\electric (drive by wire)controlled throttle its mearly just ajusts thats why you dont have the bouncing of the tack, you can have it at redline and it will stay nice and flat so not acually cutting fuel per say, it would be like you stepping on the throttel and then just stopping at a certain rpm, no spark loss no fuel loss just holding at a point if you catch my drift

so i think it is in the throttle body ware it will be controlling the revs but again not shure

Sid some of the guys and I were just talking about this last night...it's a great thing either way to have a window switch. casue either way you can have a bad result. Just like hitting the NOS at idle
