Question re: supercharger pulleys

Hi guys. I'm new to MCs, having just bought an '04 MCS yesterday. It has been modified a little (I know that's a shock to y'all), including the 19% pulley mod. I'm wondering if this mod causes undue strain on the supercharger/bearings, etc since it is spinning it faster than normal ? What I've gleaned here is that you don't want to be hanging around at high revs with this mod. Is it an overboost consideration or because you could be running the S/C beyond its design limits ?

Thanks for any advice you can offer !

You have to watch readline...

And as an excusize for the student, you get to search for the table of effective red-lines vs SC and crank pully diameter. I can't remember if the 19 shouldn't be run to motor redline or not, but the information is out there. You can go to Eatons web page to look at the unit red-line, and then it's just a question about how fast the motor can turn before you hit that number. Luckily, all this math has been done before (you can try searching on Luddite, as I used that to chastize those that didn't want to do the math ) it's within a few posts of the numbers.

What else came with the car? And did that allow you to get it for more or less than an un-modded car?

Matt

and welcome to the "S" club!

The general concensus is that you don't want to hang around the upper rpm band very long with a 19% pulley. At redline, your very close to the maximum rpm the supercharger can spin at. This is why the 19% is considered a street mod as track use will result in some problems (like water pump cavitation). Also, 19% pulley's tend to eat through S/C belts pretty fast.

That said, if your using your MCS for street use only and want some major low end power, the 19% pulley is a very good mod.

Thanks for your input, guys. I intend to use it street-only, and I'll keep it a few notches shy of red.

Matt, this MCS also came with a CAI mod, strut tower brace (this nice shiny S/S thing that goes complements the polished CAI box, Brembo drilled/grooved rotors, some high-perf brake pads, S/S brake lines, upgraded plug wires (and, I assume plugs). I think it has nearly all the options except the cold-weather kit. Tan/black leather seats, etc. Since it only has 10K on the clock, I think I did OK paying 24,000 for it. Funny how some cars just "call" to you, and this one did to me !

Oh yeah, the guy who owned it had put XM radio in it too, and the subscription is still working, so it's free right now !

I have about 1500 miles on the clock since my 19% mod and I'm loving it. Low end torque is beautiful, no signs of trouble, no SES lights, no unusual belt wearing or slippage. I'm all street use, so can't comment on track abuse, but she's holding up just fine. Enjoy.
