lost mileage on odometer

I brought my '05 MINI MCS in to have the clock (speedometer) replaced because it was gaining time every week. When I got the car back from the service department I noticed that the odometer had almost 60 miles less than when I dropped it off.

I asked the service advisor why the computer doesn't have the same mileage on the car. He took it back to the tech and was told that "it's normal" when the swap that part out

Where is the mileage info actually stored? Seems kind of weird that someone could lower their mileage by disconnecting that component...

I read from a document I got

while I had access to minitechinfo.com ($25 for 24 hours - you can download pdfs, and some other file types)

That the IKE (which is abbrivation for Instrument Cluster Electronics in German - meaning the center instrumentation - whether the standard speedo, or chrono package, whatever... the same electronics are behind it, and the IKE and BC1 computer do communicate back and forth with VIN number, milage, ....

Look at this screen shot from a pdf... and see if you can get them to fix it....

I couldn't get a simple order from McDonald's drive thru yesterday - Good Luck with getting this fixed !!!!

it is illegal to remove milage from car odometer: however, why would you complain if it just a qurk of removing a part?.. drive sixty miles and it will be ok. btw, they added 60 miles to your warranty so, its all good.

just wondering if this "quirk" was going to happen everytime my center instrument cluster was removed for some kind of maintenance.

thanks all for digging up the tech info...

Not to side track the thread or anything .... I've had my '05 MCS for a few weeks and I noticed the clock was about 15 minutes fast. I figured it was just set wrong when I bought it. Now I'm wondering if there is a problem! How much time was yours gaining each week?
