Loud knock after turning the car off

After a drive I hear a loud knock coming from my exhaust. I believe it's the cat but I am not sure. Anyone else's mcs does that after driving it and turning off the engine? It's probably doing that when the engine is on but it's too loud to hear.

I should clarify the sound. It's not a backfire or even engine related. When you turn your car off..any car after it's been running/driving it awhile and you hear some ticking noises coming from the hot metal parts, that's what it's like except it's a loud knock or thunk and it's always from around the cat converter area on the passenger side of the car.

The ticking is usually the cat cooling down. It shouldn't be all that loud, though.

It's pretty loud and it's been that way since it was new.

My car has done this since new. It's normal, and the intensity of the sounds seem to depend on how hard the car was driven before shutting down. I like to think of it as the car cracking it's nuckles after a good workout.
