Factory LSD in snow...

Hi,

I will be ordering my MCS this week and wanted to know if it was worth getting the factory LSD for snow driving. More specifically, I was wondering if the LSD will help me get out of snow banks in winter. I have gotten stuck before with only one wheel spinning with my present car (C230) and it is extreemly frustrating...

I would appriciate snow driving experiances with LSD...

Thanks!

I would doubt if anyone has yet to really experience LSD in tons of snow yet! I'm in Indiana and I've only have two LSD cars come and go.

LSD is designed to transfer power from one wheel that is slipping to other wheels- so in that case I would highly doubt the likely hood of LSD (alone) helping you out of a snow bank.

Do what I do- Try not to get stuck!

I believe it work but I'm not an expert on LSD. I ordered my car with it for this reason. If a one legger car only spins one wheel and a LSD car will try to spin them both until it detects slip (which will then transfer the power to the non-slipping wheel) then you would already have twice as much traction for starting off in snow. Does that sound right to you guys?

It all depends on which wheels are in the snow bank. If one of the front wheels are on something that the tyres will bite then you will go. If not break out the hot coco, cell phone and blanket.

Remember MINIs don't get stuck, people get stuck in them.
John

PS
I would go for the LSD, at the cost it is worth it.

I would definitely get the LSD for snow driving. I haven't driven my MCS w/LSD in the snow yet (it usually stays at home in crappy weather), but my old school Sentra SE-R w/ factory LSD is unstoppaple in the snow, especially with Blizzaks. Just this morning, we got about 6'" of snow and my street wasn't plowed yet, and the end of the street was plowed in, but I was able to go through it all no problem.

I've got an '03 MCS with Quaife ATB, not a new '05 with factory LSD. The diff does help in snow, rain, tight corners, rotating tires (lift the car on one side with the car in gear and the Quaife keeps the elevated wheel from rotating when putting the lug bolts in), etc. Like snow tires and ABS, the laws of physics still apply.

For what it is worth, I would order the LSD in a heartbeat if I was getting a new MINI. Worth every penny.
