P0108 code haunting the car
Good evening,
I have a problem with a 2004 Mini Copper S R53 (phase 2, 170hp), completely original.
After a certain engine speed, or after a certain driving time,
- The car
- activates ASC by itself, locking it in the ON position
- Seems to clamp the engine between 1000 and 3000 rpm
- Offers an unstable engine speed with misfires and loud exhaust crackles
- Emits a strong smell of heat/combustion
-But seems to behave well at higher revs.
A single fault code appears on the display, even after deleting it:
Code p0108, concerning absolute manifold pressure (MAP), indicates a value that's too high.
The thing is, the MAP sensor (at the airbox) can read the pressure data at low revs (around 42kpa at idle), but seems to block itself at 230kpa, either under hard acceleration, or for no apparent reason.
The TMAP sensor (on the intake manifold) is in good condition, and reads the temperature of the air introduced into the engine (between 20 and 40°).
I understand that the problem could come from..:
leaks in the intake (I've disassembled and checked everything, and the seals and manifolds seem to be in good condition)
A faulty MAP sensor (although it seems to be reading the data)
exhaust problems (my catalytic converter is complete, unclogged and in good condition, but my mufflers are in poor condition. So I tested the vehicle without the half-line, just with the exhaust manifold and catalytic converter, but the problem persisted: the ASC activates and locks up + code p0108).
Does anyone have any clues as to where the problem might be occurring?

Howdy, i would start with this solution. Maybe add some dielectric grease while your in there, works wonders!

Glad that worked, the older these cars get the more electrical gremlins seem to pop up. When im in or around any connection I add dialectic grease to A. Better the connection and B. Hopefully help prevent any corrosion.
The throttle body connector is somewhat famous for this, a bit of dialectic grease and the issue hasn't returned once!
