Stuck drive axel to bearing hub ( R53 )

Hello,

I am currently trying to remove this knuckle assembly, the only thing remaining is this axel and bearing., isn’t this axel is supposed to move/slide along the bearing spline? This thing is stuck to the bearing., now i am using this puller tool, been very careful not to break the bolts.

Am i using this tool correctly?

Car is R53 - 2004 93kmiles

Have a look here? About 4:10 or so, when he gets into the same argument. I wouldn't use that tool unless you are CERTAIN that the inner flange (secured by those 4 13mm bolts) is NOT rusted to the spindle. Is it REALLY the splines you are arguing with?

Cheers,

Carlie

The four bolts on the back on the hub must be removed. They are still visible in the first picture.

Hi Cooper48 and Cmt52663,

My steering knuckle pinch bolt snapped on me. Since I have he replacement knuckle ready on the side now I am ready to bring down the whole strut down to ball joint, tie rod, links and bearing /cv axle.

See see all them are already loose lower outer ball joint, links, tie rod ---- the 3 strut tower nuts are still there. The only thing that is holding me is this cv axle it's stuck to the bearing. So even if the bearing is still screwed tight to the knuckle the whole strut assembly is loose down to lower ball joint and tie rod., unless I am missing something here, the axle is supposed to slide out of the bearing? no? maybe little tap there and it will come loose? Isn't this tool pushing the cv axle's spline out of the bearing?

check this video... I know it's a honda civic., around 2:45 ----- so on the mini R53, the shaft is supposed to move like that correct? so now i can the disconnect the ball joint below and the tie rod nut, pull the knuckle towards me and the CV shaft will slide out correct?

Correct me if I'm wrong OP, you're just trying to remove the axle from the hub, not the bearing from the hub?

I ran into this same issue when doing a suspension overhaul a few years ago. Yes, the axle splines should just slide out of the bearing with no resistance. But over time they can weld themselves together.
I tried EVERYTHING to get it loose. I ended up removing the entire steering knuckle and axle from the car and putting it in a hydraulic shop press. It finally relented and popped out.

Yes I am trying to remove the AXLE from HUB (bearing) not HUB(bearing) from the knuckle.

So it's actually doable!.... everything is loose now except the 3 nuts on top of the strut tower and that bearing-axle... I spent 4 hours dealing with this being careful not to break more things.

But wait yours is already disconnected from the strut.... mine the knuckle are still there, the pinch bolt snapped on me.

How did you remove the axle from the tranny ? is it easy? The one I am trying to remove is the driver side.

It sounds like you're at the point where it would be easiest to remove the knuckle/strut/axle as one assembly and then try to get everything apart on the workbench.
You'll need to unmount the brake caliper, disconnect the lower ball joint and tie rod end (use one of these to avoid damage to the rubber boots). The axle will pop out of the trans with a crowbar or similar pry tool (ALWAYS replace the little c-clip that holds it in place and be VERY careful not to damage the seal when putting it back in).

Good luck!
