Depends what is wrong. The last time the light went on in our '02 was because of a bad seat wiring harness (the third). I saw that the cost for replacement was $680 Good luck.

If it is a recuring problem I would talk to the service department. Although it is past the warantee period they may fix it since it happened once while it was under warantee.

Mine came on last August, I was at about 65,000 miles. I thought it was the passenger seat wiring harness, turned out to be the drivers explosive pretensioner. One of the local MINI dealers diagnosed the problem and a different MINI dealer fixed it no charge. I told the second dealer what the results were from the first dealer. I have no clue what tripped the sensor.

I really hate to say this, but you gotta take your chances.

Good luck......

Thanks for information everyone, glad to see one thing works in the world of minis

I actually went over all of my service invoices - I'll tell you that I have alot of them - apparently this will be the 3rd time I've gotten this issue in less than a year.

So I guess I should do the math if it's $680 per incident @ 3 times a year for my remaining lets say 3 more years if my car makes it till it's paid off.

hmmm - only cost me $6,120 to keep my airbags working for the next 3 years at this failure rate - I hope Mini USA is watching - cause I'm fed up with my POS mini.

Did I also mention that my windows have failed on both sides, coolant resevoir 2 times failed, boot release - failed twice, My tranny failed and replace - just waiting for the 2nd time to happen again.....gee when things break on a 02 MCS - it breaks in twos or three's

Tell me about it!

I'm on my FOURTH steering rack already in less than 25K!!

I am gonna talk to the purchasing manager at MINI in Cowley (Oxford, UK)tomorrow to find out where they source these POS items. they really shouldn't just break with a bit of spirited driving. I'll find out what the score is on this item and i'll talk to the electronics insource manager for you to see if there is any known fault/cure for this seat harness malarky.

Cheers,

Henry

They are buying leftover steering racks from Ford Granadas (Scorpios).

Regardless of whether or not the car is under warranty, if it is a recurring problem that was never resolved when it was under warranty, the dealer and/or Mini USA needs to pay for the repairs.

I agree! I had the probelm fixed twice when the car had less than 5k on it. This is a safety issue thet they never fixed to your satisfaction. Please let us know if the blow you off, or attempt to charge you.

Good luck!

Luckly I wasn't too far past my warrenty - so the customer service rep just pushed it thru as a late appointment.

Lucky me - just to let you know- would of costed under $400 bucks to fix

Great news that they did not charge you; I guess safety items are not backed for a "reasonable life" of the car. Seems wrong. Anyone know?

I believe emissions liability goes past the warranty......

If you are anywhere near SO Cal Steve's Auto Clinic will locate the problem and re set your lite for next to nothing if not completely free. I have a repeating problem with the harness under my passenger seat . If i re set all 3 plugs it takes care of it and he re sets the light.
