I’m rebuilding my 2011 R56 JCW N14 engine after piston failure. There’s not enough room between my engine stand and block to install the flywheel and then the locking pin. I put the pistons at roughly even before installing the head.
1. Can I go ahead and install the camshafts w/o locking the crank and when I get ready to install the timing chain use the engine lift to install the flywheel/locking pin? Any other thoughts?
Put the engine on the ground or a bench, then do the flywheel and lock it, then mount the cams / tranny. Don't risk adding cams without locking flywheel. Put the entire drivetrain back in the car as a complete package. Whole lot easier to do timing with engine on a bench or dolly's, and not much fun installing a tranny after engine is installed.
