Back up sensors
Back up sensors
When placing my 2008 Mini Cooper S convertible in reverse, sometimes the back up sensors work and at other times, I just hear a long beeeep, which is so annoying! What could be causing this on again/off again situation? The sensors clearly work when they work, but are totally useless other times. Could a sensor just be glitching or does something just need to be reset? Replacing the back up sensors is another overpriced MINI part problem.
Thanks for any and all suggestions!

I had to.fix a bad sensor on my daughter's R52S. When you get the long beep, leave it in reverse but turn off the car (but leaving the ignition On - or put it in reverse with the ignition on/engine off and if you get the long beep then try this). Then go to the rear bumper and put your ear up to each sensor. If it is working, you'll hear clicking, then check the next one and so on. I replaced her bad one with a good used one I pulled from a junkyard. I have spares now for the next time one goes bad, too.
Ok, when they get water in them they fail.
Mine did this and i used the schwaben scan tool to tell which one, you can also do this by listening when the car is in reveres with it on position but not running of course, listen to each sensor for the little clicks. No clicks then that sensor wire is bad or its the sensor. Which is the same as above. This is what i did on my R52
You can get the painted ones or if you are ok with the black dots you can replace them al with the black non painted ones that are lower priced. You would have to replace all four as they would look weird. You cannot paint these as the factory sensors are painted by robots that allow the correct thickness of paint. Otherwise the PDC will not works
