I wanted to post this hoping it would help someone. My airbag light came on ant the code was 93A8, driver side airbag stage 1. I could clear the code and it would come back as soon as I started the car. From reading I felt like it was an electrical problem and the airbag was OK. I had an extra SZL from years ago when I put cruise on my car. The SZL on my 08 would not program for the cruise to work. I removed the steering column covers and pulled the two plugs from the back of SZL and plugged them into the extra SZL that I had. I then plugged my airbag into the front plug. I cranked the car and cleared the airbag code and it was gone.
Just to test I plugged the three plugs back to the installed SZL and the code came back. I then separated the two SZLs from the clocksprings on the front, I felt like the ribbon cable had gone bad and was causing the problem, hopefully the SZL electronics were OK. I put my old clockspring on to the SZL that I was using when the code popped up. Plugged everything back up and the air bag code was gone. So in summary in my case it was the ribbon cable. I'm sure there are other problems that can cause this code but be sure and check the ribbon cable. As these cars get older more and more of these cables will go bad and cause codes. SZL with clockspring removed. This is the clockspring that attaches to the SZL. This contains the ribbon cable.
