So did in frame rebuild on engine so all new pistons rings bearings, time chain etc. 180 compression all the way across. but car will not idle runs down road fine but if you dont keep you foot on the gas it dies. It is throwing no codes,was throwing cam retard code but since I installed two new vanos it has not done that. It was weird though before engine would fire up and sound very smooth and quite. Then it would get loud like lifters and valves were rattling and I would get the cam retard code. But it would idle like this but just sounded terrible. But drove down the road fine and idled fine.
Looks like it is running rich by looking at plugs.
I have changed
Both oxy sensors
Both vanos
Both cam sensors
and temp sensor
last night pulled vlave cover and found this,,,so not sure if that effecting the idle but something is up. Its the cam followers they are jacked up rubbing against the cam. The guides the run in the grey cap are all worn. I dont rember them being like that when I put it together not sure what would have caused it.
Well we can discuss VANOS adaptations later. You have other issues.
My car did the same thing on the number 1 cylinder when the valve seat dropped. Really pi$$ed me off because it was 500 miles after I replaced the head gasket. Had to pull the head off again to have all of the valve seats replaced. I wasn't going to take any chances. Is one of your valves lower than the other? It's hard to tell from the picture. If it is, you've dropped a seat. I need another picture where the VANOS spring rests against the back of the roller (intermediate lever).
When you pulled the motor apart, what work was performed on the cylinder head? What shop? Did they have the special VANOS spring compressor tools? I paid $275 for my tools. If you don't have them and try to remove the springs, you'll pull the threads right out of the cylinder head. That's what the shop did to my head. I had to helicoil all of the parent threads.

I just had head done but the shop sucked!!!!! had my head two months every week had a different excuse,,such a nightmare then when I get it back they say well we could only do have the valve seats as we dont have the equipment to do the job WTF oh yeah and we cant get the head back together all the way,,, we dont do that we are a machine shop,,what a joke the should be ashamed, anyways I googled doing the springs that was what they couldn't figure out. I did it with flat piece of metal and a socket extension and my wife's help but it was not easy!

The shop replaced all the intake valve seats,they said they tested the other side and they didnt need replaced. I told them I wanted them replaced and they said that wasnt possible. They also replaced a few valves They pulled the head bearing bracket I reinstalled it and used rtv and have not had any leaks Thanks you for the link.. I had not heard about that but i did not have a gasket for for it so just assumed you used rtv.
