SC/Water pump drive
SC/Water pump drive
So I had a cracked coolant reservoir, and instead of just replacing it in a timely manner like an intelligent human, I was just refilling it with water until I could get to it. This wasn't an issue, as I live in a pretty mild climate, and travel around a lot to warmer areas. Well, I came to Missouri to visit family and got hit with an ice storm, thereby freezing my car. Initially I didn't think it was that bad, it cracked my heater core, which I replaced with relative ease and thought I'd be omw. Think again, kept overheating. Thought it was a thermostat issue, changed that pretty easy. Nope wasn't that either. Figured it would be the water pump since that's really the only other thing it could be, as the radiator wasn't cracked or blocked. After pulling the pump, I saw that the gear between the SC and pump was not only missing one of the "prongs", but it spun freely on the rod it is on. Great.
After some reading, I've seen people talking about the gears on the inside stripping, which mine aren't. I took the back plate off and the oil inside looked fine, although it is now no longer inside the SC lol. The gears are all intact, no missing teeth and no weird marks anywhere.
I guess what it comes down to is, can just the back plate be replaced with the gears and everything already on it? Can just that weird looking sc/pump connecting gear be replaced? Am I screwed and have to get a whole new SC? I don't have unlimited funds, but my tax return is coming soon and I was going to use that to pay the car off, but I guess that won't be happening now.
