Need help to start R56 :(
Hi everyone. I’m so happy to be part of this community. I have small issue with car what we just buy from our neighbor. Long story short 2007 Mini Cooper S automatic transmission absolutely gorgeous inside and out won’t start. Starter spinning for 7-10 seconds and small puf from muffler. So I like ok is easy fix. Let’s check battery, gas and spark. I Did work by myself : 1) I found out is better weak (get new installed and recharge old battery both work fine. 2) Fuel pump not working, no noise at all (replace the fuel pump and now is make noise and also pump gas I checked at the rump). 3) I Oreder wrench for the spark plugs and spark plugs (not check yet for the spark on the end of spark plug or conditions of them, I will update you guys later). 4) I check obd2 scanner not show any trouble codes. Order new obd2 WiFi scanner to check all data and storage codes if any. My qwestion for all of you car gurus and experts , what else can be wrong if car not start? Neighbor tell me car just died to the road. My idea is bad HPFP or maybe camshaft sensor or DME? Any idea guys? Thanks for help :) https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.nor...2a7302faf.jpeg This is my mini https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.nor...2380c2f03.jpeg |
I scanned with obd2 and this what I get: 1) P0100 2) P1138 3) P0503 4) P0342 5) P1776 6) P1777 I guess I need to check camshaft senor or just buy new one? |
Shot of starting fluid in air cleaner to see if it rumbles. If it rumbles then gas problem. No rumble electrical

https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.nor...f7e5ee809.jpeg Should I spray starting fluid into this pipe? It’s coming from the filter box to turbo https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.nor...238f3fe46.jpeg https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.nor...262d5a369.jpeg |
yes and not a lot

Looks like I need to get helper here. I try to spray couple times not much maybe 2-5 seconds and then crank car again. No difference. Only dry starter and engine tart tar tart tart. My son will come later today after his hockey game and I will try to spray and crank starter the same time. Thanks for the help. I keep you guys posted.

Hi everyone. I spray car starter strait to the turbo and zero effect. Nothing happen, just starter spinning let’s it. Check spark plugs and they make sparks but condition is really bad. Any ideas what else I can check ? Thanks https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.nor...aaf66b34f.jpeg |

I order new spark plugs and camshaft sensor. |
Did you do a compression check? Take the valve cover and take a look at the chain and everything inside. Spin the engine by hand and check the timing. Newtis.info is an excellent source to use.

I in Manassas VA, I will install new spark plugs and camshaft sensor tomorrow. I will try to start if not I take a park valve cover and also check compression. I keep you posted guys. Thanks |
Hi everyone. Today I installed new spark plugs $70 for 4 :( and new camshaft sensor . Nothing change:( only car now every 5-7 seconds car puf puf from muffler. I’m absolutely lost. For tomorrow planing to do a compression test . Any idea what else I can check . I check sparks, fuel, fuses all is fine but car won’t start. I feel like is almost there but no. I sprey starting fluted strait in the turbo and nothing happen . Any idea guys. Thanks |
Just read scanner p1776 and P1777 |

Pull out new spark plugs they all wet from gasoline? https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.nor...1bd370c14.jpeg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.nor...d6bd90017.jpeg |
I also find some gas inside of the cylinders . I take it out looks like mix gas in black color. https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.nor...105ce3d1c8.jpg |
if the cylinders are flooded with gas, did you check the timing by the way? spin the engine by hand clockwise until you see the letting on the camshafts in the middle...put some straws in the cylinders and they all have to be same height.

Ok guys. I open Valve cover gasket and plastics pieces everywhere. Looks like on top part of the engine is gone and shredded to the chain . What I’m looking here ? |
well well well....a very familiar site...you might be lucky and dont have to do a valve job. but it is time to clean, replace, reset, install, and fire it up.

Timing chain slipped off the intake sproket gear? This is the first time I've seen it. My previous 3 timing job experiences were all due to the top guide broken off, leaving pieces for me to find down below. If I were in your shoes, at this point, doing a timing chain job is a blind next step because you should have your valves checked first. It's probably best move to just pull the heads and have it leak down tested. Mean while, go hunt for the broken pieces and see if you can puzzle every part back together. I wouldn't close the valve cover without having that peace of mind that everything is in right order.

The OP mentions 'plastic pieces everywhere' -- does that mean a chain guide has failed as part of the carnage & needs to be replaced? Since these are interference engines & we know the failure happened at highway speed, I'm wondering why anyone would think a valve job is not going to be needed?
Terron, I'm near you in Woodbridge. My R57 is down with misfires that I'm trying to diagnose, but if you need a hand getting the chain reinstall I could spend a few hours wrenching with you. |
Guys I really appreciate your help in this project :) My idea to get chain back on track and see if the valves damage . After that move we can decide to keep the engine or repair or maybe buy used. Mark if you have time let me know when . I don’t have any tools for the timing lock or any thing like this. I can order if needed, but if we can put chain back and try to fire up is gone be great. Let me know. I keep you posted. Thanks everyone for great support :) |
