Swapping r52 fuel door for r53 bubble type

My car lost its fuel door lid (see pic), there is just a black piece there covering the cap. Will any of the bubble type doors fit on there, or would I have to replace the door assembly? Is that even possible on the r52? Has anyone done it?

Btw that sucker is pricey! $40-50 used or primered new.

Going to move you to the Stock Problems/Issues area.

No, the only thing that will work is the R52 cap. Most likely what happened is that there is a small push tab on the protrusion that you see at about 4 o'clock. If that little piece brakes then the fuel door is able to rotate and come off.

I see one on ebay for $39. Unless you change out the entire door mechanism (that is a PIA, and I have posting in the How To with pictures) you will need to take some plastic epoxy and glue the little receivers in the cap so that it does not rotate off.
