clutch question
Hi,
I am researching replacing my clutch. I have a 2003 5 speed Mini (not a Sport model). I found out that in addition to the clutch I need to purchase a flywheel.
Because I purchase the parts myself and then they get installed, does anyone know how I can find out whether my car has the solid fly wheel or a duel mass flywheel?
Thank you for your help!

Try http://www.realoem.com, easy instructions on how to find all the specs of your car, it's a lot nicer than doing a full teardown just to find an obscured part number.

Little late for a response, but the Cooper uses a single mass flywheel, you'll also need to make sure you get the right flywheel for your car. The Coopers had two different 5 speed options and they both used different flywheels, and the car will be undriveable if you fit the wrong one to the car.

flywheel
Hi nkfry,
Thanks for your reply. I'm a little confused that you said that my mini takes a single mass flywheel. When I called two different parts departments at a mini dealership, they both told me I had a dual mass flywheel, based on my VIN number.
I sympathize with anyone who has to look up flywheel parts. It is unbelievably confusing. Some vendors referred to them as twin mass flywheels, (which I assumed was the same thing as dual mass flywheel, but not positive).
There is another crazy expensive flywheel that is now out, that allows the owner to have their car converted from a dual mass flywheel to a single. I do not know what the benefit of this is, but I'm sure the people who work on their cars do.
In the end, and it was not an easy decision, I have decided not to get the repairs done. The clutch was one huge expense in addition to the transmission leak. I was also hoping to soon replace the tensioner, drive belt, thermostat and housing, and water pump. It's just too much expense for me.
Incidentally, I found out that my transmission leak would not have benefited from one of those bottled leak fix products. The transmission guy said that works for leaks where the rubber seals are involved. Unfortunately, my leak is in the case housing, and he said it on the seam, where the two halves of the transmission fit together.
Anyway, I have enjoyed the 5 years with my mini very much. Thanks to all who have replied and helped me on this site for the various parts I have needed during that time.

since you have an R50 non S it's a solid flywheel this is the one you need

You can also tell by the clutch disc having springs in it. If it's a dual mass flywheel the disc has no springs in it.
