First Oil Change...

I've just hit the 1200 mile break-in mark in my new MINI S. I've had freinds tell me that I should get the oil changed after this milestone but the dealer denies that I should. I have no confidence in changing it myself and would either take it to a local oil-change place or to the dealer. Of course the dealer doesn't want to (sounds like).
Any advice one way or the other?

Spoon_Gouge,

Aloha and welcome to NAM.
It's really your option to do the oil change early either now as some do (to remove metal in the oil from the break in process). Or wait a bit longer like 4000 miles or wait until the normal first oil change of 10,000 to 12,000 miles.

Everyone does it a bit different and there is no one right way. You dealer will pay for only the 10,000 mile change. You'd have to buy the synthetic oil (not normally covered under a standard oil change- costs about $25 worth of oil) a MINI oil filter cannister and O-ring from your parts dept, as garages don't stock those parts.

The dealer will do a low mileage oil change when the car is a year old; or close to the date you picked up your mini. It;s coverd with warranty. ---- bleecker.
